Welcome back guys, This week in my ENG101 class, we were asked to pick a food topic to write about and I chose food safety: food irradiation. When you see this food irradiation symbol on your food, it basically means they used radiation to make the food last longer. The radiation kills the bacteria that grows on the fruits, vegetables and meats to make it last longer with a better risk of not being sick. This topic is important because it is an issue that is rarely seen but it is in your local grocery store and could cause long term health problems from a little virus to something big like cancer. I found this to be interesting to talk about because food is a everyday necessity and everyone should be aware on what is done to the foods they eat. I pulled two comics off the internet about food irradiation and was impressed on the messages from both pictures.
The first comic is a picture of a lady shopping for fresh fruits and vegetables but instead of the names of all the fresh fruits and veggies, there are signs of radioactive waste , unhealthy foods with a guy in a full blown face mask and body suit. This is my point on the whole topic, we are eating irradiated foods and don"t know because there are other words covering up the truth. As you can see, "fresh farm products" is displayed by the fresh fruits and vegetables but really they aren't even in there natural state.
The second comic is a picture of a woman and her son going grocery shopping but instead of all the labels of food that we're used to, its labels with the truth and what they do to us humans. This picture is really powerful because it shows the food for what it does for our bodies and what harm it causes to us. Our everyday food could possibly cause us a lifetime of effects and we don't know because it has the label tat we are so used to. Next time your in your local food mart or grocery store pay close attention to food safety and the symbols on the food because that lets you know if your eating irradiated food.
I really like the comics in your post. I think they help define all your ideas on food safety.
ReplyDeleteGood selections for visual support and analysis of the various aspects, especially your considerations regarding irradiation.
